Families find their favorite viewing spot \u2013 a blanket spread out on the ground, the bed of a pickup, the back of an SUV. Kids gather for a quick game of catch in a grassy patch beneath the giant screen. Darkness descends at sunset, and the movie begins at this drive-in theater located in north-central Missouri.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-drive-in-theater-experience\">The Drive-In Theater Experience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drive-ins offer an experience like no other. Moviegoers can pack their favorite snacks (or make a trip to the concession stand) and get comfortable with a pillow or two while they enjoy a first-run feature or a classic film <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitmo.com\/articles\/stargazing-missouris-heavenly-show\">beneath a starry sky<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outdoor movie theaters have dwindled since their heyday in the 1950s and 1960s \u2013 when more than 4,000 dotted the roadside nationwide. With just a few hundred remaining, many drive-ins have become road-trip destinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-missouri-s-drive-in-theaters\">Missouri&#8217;s Drive-In Theaters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From metropolitan multiplexes to single screens nestled in the trees, Missouri drive-ins still light up the night all summer long. Get your tickets for an unforgettable show under the stars. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-moberly-five-and-drive-moberly\">Moberly Five and Drive, Moberly<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moberly\u2019s original Hi Way 63 Drive-In operated from 1950 to 1983. A new building was constructed in 1997 to house five indoor movie screens as well as the projector for the outdoor screen, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbtheatres.com\/our-theatres\/x04hd-b-and-b-moberly-five-and-drive\/\">Moberly Five and Drive<\/a> was born. The movie house is one of only a handful of indoor-outdoor theaters in the United States.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-66-drive-in-carthage\">66 Drive-In, Carthage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing screams nostalgia like a drive-in on the Mother Road. Located on Old 66 Boulevard, the <a href=\"https:\/\/66drivein.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">66 Drive-In<\/a> \u2013 with its original neon sign \u2013 is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The theater opened in 1949 and had a 34-year run before shutting down. It was renovated and reopened in 1998.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-starlite-drive-in-cadet\">Starlite Drive-In, Cadet<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With space for 700 cars, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.starlitedrivein.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Starlite Drive-In<\/a> is Missouri\u2019s largest drive-in&nbsp;outside a metro area.&nbsp;Located 50 miles south of St. Louis, the two-screen theater dates back to&nbsp;1952.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sunset-drive-in-theater-aurora\">Sunset Drive-In Theater, Aurora<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/sunsetdriveinaurora.com\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sunsetdriveinaurora.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sunset Drive-In Theatre<\/a>, located 30 miles southwest of Springfield, has been in operation\u00a0since 1951. It\u2019s one of just a handful of outdoor movie theaters that allows you to fire up a small gas grill for a car-side barbecue. You can also order a pizza from the concession stand and have it delivered to your car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-barco-drive-in-lamar\">Barco Drive-In, Lamar<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/lamarmo.com\/movies\/info.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Barco Drive-In<\/a>, the longest continuously running drive-in movie theater in Missouri, will celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2024. The drive-in shows family-friendly double features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-phoenix-theater-amp-drive-in-houston\">Phoenix Theater &amp; Drive-In, Houston<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Originally named the Sunset Drive-In when it opened in 1951, the drive-in operated until 1998. With the addition of an inside screen, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phoenixdrivein.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Phoenix Theater &amp; Drive-In<\/a> reopened in 2001 as an indoor-outdoor theater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rock-n-roll-drive-in-chaffee\">Rock \u2018N\u2019 Roll Drive-In, Chaffee<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Built in 1955, the old&nbsp;Montgomery Drive-In sat dark for nearly 30 years before being resurrected in 2020&nbsp;as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocknrolldrivein.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rock \u2018N\u2019 Roll Drive-in<\/a>. The drive-in shows classic movies and new releases on the refurbished concrete movie&nbsp;screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pine-hill-drive-in-piedmont\">Pine Hill Drive-In, Piedmont<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Catch a movie in the countryside at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=61589725394390\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pine Hill Drive-In<\/a>. The old-school outdoor theater operated continuously from 1953 to 2015. The drive-in was renovated and reopened in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-21-drive-in-van-buren\">21 Drive-In, Van Buren<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.21drive-in.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">21 Drive-In<\/a> originally opened in 1952. The single-screen drive-in has one of the largest screens in Missouri and a 600-car capacity. The theater hosts double features and retro films.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-twin-crescent-drive-in-buffalo\">Twin Crescent Drive-In, Buffalo<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the newest drive-in theaters in Missouri, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/twincrescent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Twin Crescent Drive-In<\/a> opened in 2022. The drive-in shows classic flicks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lakeside-ashland\">Lakeside, Ashland<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lakesideashland.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lakeside Ashland<\/a> offers a traditional drive-in experience as well as a large lawn for moviegoers to bring their chairs and blankets. See classic films and newer releases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-seasonality\">Seasonality<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most Missouri drive-ins are open spring through fall and close during the winter months.
